A proposed CMS rule extends electronic prior authorization requirements from non-drug items to drugs, adopts FHIR standards for prior auth transactions and mandates API metrics reporting. Most compliance dates begin October 1, 2027.
CMS now proposes to require impacted payers to incorporate coverage and documentation requirements into those APIs to support the electronic prior authorization of drugs covered under a medical benefit beginning October 1, 2027.
